COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This 4 hour webcast is suitable for professionals working with adults who have insight problems following brain injury. The course presents a practical model within which to understand awareness and acceptance problems following brain injury. The webcast encourages the development of practical activities that can be put into practice within teams.

 

We recommend allocating a full day to watch this webcast as our timings do not include times for breaks or any pauses or rewinds you may wish to take.

Defining 'insight'; understanding related terms; awareness and acceptance.

MECHANISMS OF AWARENESS 14 minutes
Practical exercise - how to know what are you're strengths and weaknesses; why awareness problems exist following brain injury; denial as a protective mechanism; effects of cognitive, executive and metacognitive problems.


AREAS OF THE BRAIN INVOLVED IN AWARENESS 20 minutes
Presentation of the concept of Association Cortex with Heteromodal and Unimodal dimensions.

WHY DO WE NEED TO IMPROVE AWARENESS? 15 minutes
The importance of dealing with awareness issues; implications for rehabilitation


A PRACTICAL MODEL OF AWARENESS 19 minutes
Presenting Crosson et al's model (1989) with modifications; intellectual awareness; emergent awareness; anticipatory awareness.

ASSESSMENT OF AWARENESS 41 minutes
Assessment using Crosson et al's model (1989)


TREATMENT OF AWARENESS 42 minutes
Issues of timing of intervention, hope, emotional distress and denial.


ADJUSTMENT ISSUES 45 minutes
How to tell people; the grieving process; loss; how to deal with the distress/anger
